ON THE BOTTLE
The Story
Gdańsk, a Hanseatic thousand-year-old city, became a real power of distilling in the 17th century thanks to its multiculturalism and openness to ideas from all over the world. The vodka production mastery was brought here by immigrants from the Netherlands.
The fame of Gdańsk vodka made it appear in the literary works of Adam Mickiewicz, the great poet of Polish Romanticism. In his famous ballad entitled "Lady Twardowska" Twardowski, a legendary magician and alchemist, drinks the famous liquor.
At some point, at the bottom of the glass, the protagonist spots the devil Mephistopheles, with whom he once made a pact! Now he is forced to outsmart the fiend to avoid hell. The contract allowed the wizard to make three final wishes before giving up his soul. After the devil easily performs the first two extremely sophisticated tasks - including a bath in the holy water! - Twardowski has a knife on his throat. However, he comes up with a desperate but clever idea. As a last wish, he demands that Mefisto spend a year with his wife, the title character, Lady Twardowska, replacing him in the role of a loving husband. This turns out to be too frightening for a devil who runs away in terror… through the keyhole.
